Star Wars Art Director donates work for charity sale
Star Wars Art Director Alan Tomkins is the latest celebrity to donate an amazing work of art for the Art for Action sale in aid of children’s charity Action Medical Research.
Stars including Anneka Rice, Dame Ellen MacArthur and Maggi Hambling CBE are among those creating 5” x 8” artworks to be sold on Thursday, 15 October 2015.
Pieces by writer Esther Freud, journalist Libby Purves and best-selling crime writer Peter James will also be displayed at Copdock Hall in Suffolk, each priced at £30, and collectors can snap up as many works of art as they like: each card will be signed on the reverse so buyers will not know whose work they have bought until they have made their purchase.
Tomkins, who was nominated for an Oscar for his work on The Empire Strikes Back, has given organisers a signed print of the original designs for his snowspeeder which featured in the hit 1980 movie. The technical drawing, which shows detailed plans for the Rebel Alliance vehicle, will be auctioned on the night.
At a similar event organised by the charity’s Dunmow committee in February 2014, celebrities including Stephen Fry, John Hurt CBE, Sir Roger Moore, Charlie Waite, Paul Benney and Jenny Hanley donated pieces and helped to raise almost £5,000.
Tickets priced at £20 are selling fast for the Art for Action sale, which takes place from 6.30pm until 9pm. Fizz and canapés will be served, and a donations bar will offer beers and wine.
With the help of its supporters, Action Medical Research has played a significant role in many medical breakthroughs for more than 60 years, from the development of the first UK polio vaccines to the use of ultrasound in pregnancy. It is currently funding research into meningitis, Down syndrome, epilepsy and premature birth, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children.
