Wallingford resident attempts London Marathon record in a wedding dress

11 April 2014

Sarah Dudgeon from Wallingford is running the Virgin Money London Marathon this Sunday and hopes to make it into the Guinness Book of Records for the fastest marathon run – in a wedding dress! Following strict guidelines from Guinness, Sarah plans to run Sunday’s Virgin Money London Marathon in under 3 hours 41 minutes to claim the title.

Sarah also ran the Manchester Marathon last Sunday, so London will also be her second marathon in a week raising money for children’s charity Action Medical Research and the British Heart Foundation.

The idea to run in a wedding dress came from a fancy dress marathon Sarah regularly runs in Medoc, France, with her husband. The event falls near their wedding anniversary so every year she and her husband, also a keen runner, dress as bride and groom and travel to France to take part. Sarah has previously run 23 marathons, including London six times.

Sarah says: “I really enjoy running marathons; the training and everything about it. I love running in a dress in France and even add accessories to make it fun. Although I usually run in a shorter frock than the one I have to wear for London, I’m really looking forward to it and I’m confident that I complete the 26.2 miles in new record time.”

Sarah has a personal connection to children’s charity Action Medical Research. Back in 1968 the charity provided vital funds for her grandfather Professor Alastair Dudgeon’s groundbreaking research into the rubella vaccine. The research successfully demonstrated that the rubella vaccine virus did not pass from person to person, gave long lasting immunity and was safe. Without this vaccine, if a woman becomes infected with rubella during the first four months of pregnancy, it passes to the developing baby and can cause severe birth defects such as deafness, blindness, congenital heart defects and cerebral palsy.

Action Medical Research is currently supporting work around stillbirth, epilepsy, meningitis, cerebral palsy and brain cancer, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children.
